Whenever I try "the count" with Kieran, it escalates to this:
(Often he hits the teens more accurately - it's still hit & miss in that range. This wasn't his best work)
"God is the designer of the family. He intended that the greatest of happiness, the most satisfying aspects of life, the deepest joys should come in our associations together and our concerns one for another as fathers and mothers and children." -Gordon B. Hinckley. "What God Hath Joined Together," Ensign, May 1991.

HAHAHAHAHA. Good try.
Just a suggestion - I always count backwards now because that very problem worried me. Plus I read somewhere that since numbers go on forever - how do they know when the end is? Which makes sense to me because sometimes I give them 10 seconds to do something, sometimes 30 depending on what I'm asking - so counting backwards tells them how much time they have. Usually 3 if they're in trouble. ;-)
Anyway. Love it.
I do count backwards sometimes. Same result because he can count backwards too. :-) It all works out though because he actually obeys WHILE joining the count. He previously learned what "3" means, but I'm not sure if he complies to avoid 3, or for the fun of counting with me. Either way, it's working for now. (Emphasis on "for now")
